Burns supper in Newbuildings

BREADY Ulster Scots Pipe Band, through their very own Burns Society, will celebrate their 21st Burns Night Supper this week.

Every year since 1989 the band has in some shape or form celebrated the life of the Scottish Bard.

It is said that the most powerful law in the scientific world is the law of unintended consequences! In 1801, on the fifth anniversary of the death of Robert Burns, nine men who knew him met for dinner in Burns Cottage in Alloway to celebrate his life and works. The Master of Ceremonies was a local minister – a liberal theologian and an equally liberal host.

Hamilton Paul and his guests shared Masonic brotherhood with Rabbie and Paul devised an evening which looked a bit like a lodge ceremonial, centred on a fine fat haggis; with recitation and singing of Burns's works and a toast (in verse) to the memory of their friend and hero.

It was such a jolly evening, all agreed to meet again the following January for a Birthday Dinner for the bard, little knowing that they had invented a global phenomenon that we know as the Burns Supper – which still broadly follows the Reverend's original plan.

On hosting their first Burns Supper in 1989 one young member of the Bready Band asked 'would Robbie Burns be coming to the do', little did the band know that their celebration event would grow in popularity each year.

This year's event will take place in Villas Night Club and Discotheque, Newbuildings on Friday 29th January. The event will have entertainment from the band including, piping, scottish dancing, drumming and solo piping and a very special guest PM John Mitchell formerly of the LA Scots and Toronto Police Pipe Bands will be entertaining the crowds with his very own very special style of playing.
