Businesses ‘stub out’ sales to under age smokers

COLERAINE Borough businesses are continuing to ‘stub out’ sales of cigarettes and tobacco to under-age smokers.

During August, Coleraine Council’s Environmental Health department carried out test purchases of cigarettes in 17 premises around the borough.

“Of the 17 premises targeted in this particular exercise, all were found to be compliant and refused to sell cigarettes to the child used in the exercise,” Kieran Doherty, Corporate Director of Environmental Service, told councillors at a meeting on Tuesday.

“It was evident therefore that robust controls were in place to prevent persons under 18 years of age purchasing tobacco products.”
