Businessman Carlin chosen to replace Meehan

A GLENGORMLEY businessman has been co-opted to Newtownabbey Borough Council to fill the vacancy left by the resignation last month of Sinn Fein councillor Briege Meehan.

Brendan Carlin was nominated by the Alliance Party at a Special Meeting held in the council's Mossley Mill headquarters on Wednesday, April 7.

Mrs Meehan, the wife of late prominent republican Martin Meehan, stepped down from the council on March 16, after being suspended from Sinn Fein.

Alliance group leader Tom Campbell said there had been unanimous agreement to co-opt Mr Carlin.

He claimed that Sinn Fein had failed to put forward a possible candidate for co-option and the alternative course of a by-election would have cost ratepayers 30,000.

Commenting upon his successful co-option to council Mr Carlin, said: "I am delighted that the Borough Council has agreed to co-opt me to join council for the remaining period of this term which ends in May 2011.

"As a local family man living and working in the Glengormley area for the past 20 years I regard myself as an active member of the local Glengormley community and join council with no party political tag or association."
