Busy Christmas for Samaritans

A CHARITY offering emotional support to people in distress answered almost 200 calls in Londonderry on Christmas Day and Boxing Day this year.

The Samaritans was contacted by local people who were lonely, had financial worries or relationship problems over the festive period.

Commenting on the figures, Sheena McGrellis, Director of the Londonderry Branch of Samaritans, said: "Once again this year we have had a busy Christmas at the centre.

"We are glad to be able to offer emotional support to the local and wider community and would urge anyone who is in distress to get in touch.

The charity is also expecting to get a high volume of calls over the New Year.

"The New Year can often be a difficult time for people as they reflect on the past 12 months and contemplate the months ahead. Samaritans are here to listen and to offer emotional support."

Praising the volunteers who give up their spare time ro provide a safe environment for people to explore their feelings, Ms McGrellis added: " We appreciate and depend on the volunteers and we have never really had a problem dealing with the volume of calls thanks to their commitment."
