Cadet is honoured at Hillsborough Castle event

Londonderry Cadet Jack Gibson has been honoured at a ceremony at Hillsborough Castle where he was formally appointed to serve in the role of Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for the City of Londonderry for the coming year.

The role of Northern Ireland’s nine Lord Lieutenants’ Cadets is largely ceremonial and Jack who is an enthusiastic Cadet Sergeant with Foyle College Combined Cadet Force can expect to attend Colonel Donal Keegan KCVO OBE, Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for the City of Londonderry, on major civic occasions. In recognition of the award, Jack will wear a special insignia on his uniform throughout his year in office.

The Citation which accompanies his award recognises the 17-year-old student’s success in moving swiftly up the Cadet ranks, gaining a distinction in his BTEC in Public Services, and his achievements in a range of activities, notably representing the contingent in shooting at Bisley and taking part in the prestigious Military Skills competitions.

Outside Cadet life Jack has a passion for St Columb’s Cathedral where he is currently ‘learning the ropes’ as a campanologist.

He devotes much of his summers to helping out with the large number of visitors who visit the historic building.

The Citation concludes, “Jack has shown great leadership and instructional skills and is an excellent Ambassador for the Combined Cadet Force.”
