Cadets show true grit on mountain trek

The Cadets, from C Company, 1st (NI) Battalion Army Cadet Force which draws its members from the Ballymena, Cullybackey and Antrim areas , set off on the expedition section of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh from Cargan.

They made their way up to Dungonnell Dam which provides a water supply for Waterfoot, Cushendall, Cushendun, Glenravel, Broughshane, Clough, Glarryford and parts of Ballymena.

It was all uphill and so there were quite a few stops made along the way which gave the participants a chance to take in some great wilderness views.

The teams lunched in the sun and once rested they made our way through Glenariff Forest Park, which is the home of some red squirrels, but none were seen on the day.

The teams gathered at Glenariff Camp Site, where they erected tents and enjoyed an evening meal.

Sunday morning turned out damp but once the teams had reached their destination they were happy to have completed their expeditions.

Congratulation to all the teams who came from Antrim, Cullybackey, and to Ballymena Detachment whose project it was to document and recover litter along their journey.

All the cadets showed great team work and many are looking forward to continuing onto the Silver and Gold Award modules.
