Call for a ‘smart new’ Council building in Moyle

A MOYLE councillor says Moyle Council should only get a “nice (new) building” in Ballycastle if there is a proper need as it will be ratepayers who will be paying.

Councillor Robert McIlroy was speaking after Cllr Joan Baird said other councils, with which Moyle will be joining in a few years time, already have “smart new buildings” on which lots of money has been spent and she said Council staff in Ballycastle should have the same.

She said new offices could be part of a new development at the current Council offices at Mary Street, Ballycastle, which she suggested would be a good location for a leisure/visitor tourist attraction in the town.

Moyle Council previously heard it will cost at least £140,000 to bring any leisure/visitor centre to just the planning application stage.

Cllr Randal McDonnell is against spending any money on the project as he doesn’t believe it will ever get off the ground saying it is “pie in the sky”.

Any ratepayers’ money spent on the project will be a waste, said the councillor and he wanted to be recorded as being against the scheme.

Cllr Baird said a tourist facility at Ballycastle seafront would link in well with the nearby tennis courts and bowling green.

Cllr Willie Graham said the Moyle district needs a new leisure facility although he didn’t believe many people from the Causeway electoral area would use it as they are closer to facilities in Ballymoney and Coleraine.
