Call for action to repair potholes

Councillor Mark O’Dowd said he has raised concerns with Roads Service at the way in which roads in the Central Craigavon area are being allowed to fall into disrepair.

And he accused Department of Regional Development Minister of a lack of foresight in allowing the roads to fall into such a poor state.

The Sinn Féin Councillor said: “It takes just a short drive around any part of Brownlow to discover the reasons for the public’s concern. I contacted Roads Service and raised a number of issues but in particular I drew attention to the condition of Brownlow Road, Tullygally East Road and Lake Road.”

Mark was also critical of the apparent lack of foresight displayed by the Department of Regional Development.

Calling for immediate action he said: “The regime of cutbacks on road and footpath maintenance under the leadership of DRD Minister Danny Kennedy shows a lack of understanding of the benefits of short term spending.

“A road surface allowed to deteriorate will become unrepairable within a short time and will require major spend to restore it to a reasonable condition. Unfortunately this is what is beginning to happen with the roads in Brownlow.

“Potholes have appeared on the dual carriageway and the surface of the Tullygally East and Brownlow Roads resemble a patchwork quilt. This is totally unacceptable and given the volume of traffic using these roads for access to work, shops, schools and council leisure facilities, it also creates a road hazard.”
