Call for bridge upgrade

SDLP Councillor Martin Reilly has written to the DRD Minister Danny Kennedy calling for an upgrade of the Craigavon Bridge in Londonderry in the run-up to City of Culture 2013; not least the removal of painting and graffiti on this key arterial route into the city.

“It was very positive news last week that the Department of the Environment is to spend just over £500k improving a number of derelict sites along strategic arterial routes into the city ahead of UK City of Culture 2013,” he said, adding: “However, it struck me that the Craigavon Bridge and surrounding area could also benefit from some similar attention in this regard.

“The top deck of the bridge from Duke Street and the entrance to the lower deck is particularly dishevelled looking and in need of an upgrade. I have written to the DRD Minister urging his officials in Roads Service to give my request due consideration.

“The opening of the Peace Bridge last year will no doubt have led to a reduction in the number of pedestrians using the Craigavon Bridge, but motorists are still left to witness a bridge and railings in need of an upgrade, not least the removal of painting and graffiti.”
