A car park close to Lurgan's main entertainment area has become a magnet for anti-social behaviour, say local residents.

They are furious that the Park and Ride facility in William Street is now a regular drinking den for gangs of troublesome youths.

Owned by Translink, the car park is the official overflow car park for Lurgan Railway station and is regularly used by commuters.

It is one of the few free car parks in the town centre and is bang in the heart of Lurgan’s entertainment zone.

However Lurgan Sinn Féin Councillor, Máire Cairns, has highlighted the issue of anti-social behaviour and littering at the William Street Park and Ride.

“Following complaints from businesses, residents and users of the car park, particularly parents of young children who access the day centre through the area, I visited the car park and was shocked at the level of litter,in particular the smashed glass strewn across the area.

“I have been in contact with Transport N.I and have asked for an increase to the amount of weekly clean ups they already carry out in the area,

“I am also exploring options with Armagh Banbridge and Craigavon council in order to help keep this area tidy and maintain its use for the local community.

“I would urge anyone who uses this car park to be mindful of their fellow users and where possible to keep it clean, tidy and safe for all.”

A Translink spokesperson said: “We take pride in the appearance of our property and carry out daily cleaning and the removal of rubbish at the William Street Park and Ride facility.

“We are disappointed that some of our customers have not experienced the high standards of cleanliness we strive for and we will be investigating the circumstances which led to this situation.”
