Call for full investigation into how '˜dangerous' prisoner was released by mistake

Alliance Justice spokesperson Trevor Lunn has called for a full investigation after a murder suspect was released from prison by mistake.

According to police, Michael Lawrence Smith (38) was “released erroneously by the Prison Service”. He has not returned to Maghaberry Prison after last being seen in the Belfast area at 2pm on Tuesday.

The PSNI have warned that Smith, who is on remand for murder, is “dangerous”. He has an “extensive history of violence” and the public have been urged to not approach him.

“It is clear such a fundamental mistake should not have happened, particularly with a noted dangerous individual such as Smith,” Mr Lunn said.

“This is basic security and a full investigation should take place as to how it occurred. I would urge anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact police immediately,” the Lagan Valley MLA added.

The Prison Service say they are investigating the circumstances surrounding how Mr Smith’s erroneous release.
