Call for increased car parking

DUP man William Hay has called for immediate action to increase short-stay car park spaces along Clooney Terrace to help boost businesses there.

Delighted with how businesses in that area of the Waterside were thriving, Mr Hay said it concerned him that there was nothing in place to help alleviate the build-up of traffic at certain times along Clooney Terrace.

“It is particularly congested along Clooney Terrace from 5pm right through until 10.30pm or 11pm at night and especially so at weekends. The majority of the traffic is comprised of cars parked on both sides of the road with the occupants trying to access the various restaurants and ‘carry out’ premises along Clooney Terrace.

“I have already spoken to Roads Service and CCI Manager Jim Roddy about their willingness to look at providing a proper level of car parking at Clooney Terrace. Among my ideas is one to take away part of the footpath on one side to allow traffic to park there. I believe this would help relieve the major congestion,” he said, adding: “The congestion is simply down to the popularity of the Terrace and the businesses that are there. In the evening it is particularly busy and that area is definitely experiencing a growth in business activity and I believe it should be supported. I know the City Centre Initiative are supportive of doing something there and I am now calling on Roads Service to come on board and resolve the issue as a matter of urgency.”

He continued: “This is a wonderful opportunity to help the traders, and I know the PSNI will confirm that they would welcome any alleviation of congestion to help traffic flow more readily.”
