Call for information for barge project

The Enterprise Barge Restoration Project undertaken by Craigavon Museum Services is nearing completion.

Craigavon Borough Council is now calling for anyone with information on the barge, the sand industry or the inland waterways to get in touch.

The Enterprise Barge is a Lough Neagh sand barge which was built around 1900. The restoration project has been in the pipeline for a few years but work officially started in November last year and should be completed by the end of March.

The plan is to use the inside of the barge as an exhibition space telling the history of the barge through objects, artefacts and panels.

“We are currently researching the history of the sand barge,” explained Elaine Hill, Museum Manager, “however, we need to find out more about the history of the barge and those who worked on it.

When completed the barge will be a permanent fixture at Waterside House as at 18.6m by 4.25m in size - it’s a little too big to move.

Craigavon Museum Services is based at Waterside House, Oxford Island and open Monday to Saturday from10am to 4pm for details call 3834 1635 or email at [email protected]
