Call for more help for those who suffer and are affected by ADHD

Mervyn is also a Director of local charity the Phonix Project that aims to help those who have ADHD and support their families. The Phoenix Project is based at the Ballycastle Road in Coleraine.

Commenting Mervyn Storey said: “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is an internationally recognised medical condition affecting between 5 - 10% of school aged children. It is characterised by the core behavioural symptoms of inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity.

“The inattentive, overactive and impulsive behaviours of children with ADHD can be difficult to manage and can place excessive strain on children, parents and families. In addition, ADHD can have a significant disruptive influence on a child’s social development and relationships.

“I was honoured when some time ago I was asked if I would serve as a Director of local charity Phoenix Project that offers children and their families support in learning how to manage the condition. They also seek to raise awareness of the condition and to promote an understanding of it in how it affects young adults.

“ADHD is a common condition and one which we need to raise awareness of. It can be at times viewed by some as an excuse for a badly behaved child but it is a condition that needs understanding and the sufferer requires support.There is a need for more awareness in schools and further and higher education institutes and other public institutions. People suffering from this condition do have potential with the right support to thrive in their environment and achieve like anyone else.”
