Call for speed limit on road

AN 85-year-old Donaghcloney man had a lucky escape when an out of control car rammed into the side of his motor last weekend.

The pensioner was pulling out of his driveway on the Drumlin Road when a Volkswagen Polo lost control coming round a corner and crashed into the side of his car.

The man is currently being treated in hospital with a broken sternum.

The accident happened just before 10am on Saturday (October 23).

The driver of the Volkswagen escaped serious injury.

Victor Milne, a neighbour of the pensioner, witnessed the aftermath of the collision.

He said: “I just heard a massive bang. I looked outside and seen what had happened. It was a wet day, so I think the young guy just lost control. It’s very fortunate nobody was killed.

“That particular stretch of road is extremely dangerous. Not that long ago a car ended up on its roof, but luckily no-one was seriously injured. It’s only a matter of time before something awful happens.

Councillor George Savage called for that section of the road to be straightened out to make it safer for road users.

He said: “There must be three or four accidents here every year. There can be no more excuses now; this needs sorted out before someone is killed.

“A speed limit of 40mph would also be appropriate. At the minute, motorists are allowed to drive at 60mph. That is simply far too fast for such a dangerous road.”
