Call made for new justice centre

An East Antrim MLA has called on the Justice Minister to utilise the soon-to-be vacant Ballymena Courthouse building.

Alastair Ross said: “The decision to close Ballymena Courthouse leaves MEA as the only council area not bordering Belfast without a courthouse. I have written to the minister asking whether he would consider using the building as either a community justice centre or as a pilot drugs court for the area, rather than having the building sit empty.

The minister has indicated that he has asked his officials to explore the proposal and I look forward to ensuring that the building still has a justice related purpose.”
