Call to give firing range 'the bullet'

A LIMAVADY councillor has called for the closure of Magilligan's firing range after claims a cruise ship carrying over 500 tourists was greeted by "deafening" gun fire.

It happened when the International Princess Daphne ship docked at the mouth of Lough Foyle between Greencastle and the Limavady Borough village on September 3. The ship, which is a regular visitor to the area, docked to allow passengers on a number of excursions around County Donegal. As the 550 passengers came ashore, a large volume of gun shots could be heard coming from the Limavady Borough firing range.

"This type of activity is detrimental to our tourism," blasted SDLP councillor Gerry Mullan, "I would call on the MoD to close this site down immediately. In this economic climate tourism is about the only sustainable thing we have.

Alderman Mullan continued: "There is no place for this military base today. It should be closed immediately."

An MoD spokesman said that any concern on activity at the Limavady firing range could be raised through a civil representative.

He said: "We have strict procedures in place regarding training at Magilligan and remain amenable to concerns and issues. These can be raised through the civil representative."
