Calls for action on 'blackspot'

A driver was fortunate to walk away from his car after it careered into a field and landed on its roof on the Banbridge Road between Annaghnoon and Burn Hill on Thursday morning last.

The road has been the location of a number of accidents and even claimed lives.

Local councillors George Savage and Jo-Anne Dobson have both expressed serious concerns on the road's safety.

George said: "It does not bear thinking about what could happen, already people have died on the road.

"There are holes in the fence where cars have come off the road, it's only a matter of time before more lives are lost.

"I have been working with the Roads Service and it will be assessing the road and I have been assured something will be done."

Jo-Anne Dobson added: "The problem seems to be that cars are unable to see the corner as they approach it – even at normal speed.

"The end result is that car after car hurtles into the fields on either side. Given that this is happening at least once a month, it is time that remedial action was taken."

A spokeswoman for the Roads Service said: "Roads Service has agreed to assess a request for improvement works."
