A notice, posted by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough (ABC) Council in the changing rooms informed the public that while only one incident had been reported the council wished to take action to avoid any repeat.

The notice also said that the installation of cameras would “maximise the ability to indentify any such perpatrators in future.”

The exact nature of the reported attempted invasion of privacy is not known but the ABC council explained its decision.

A council spokesperson said: “CCTV cameras are being installed in the walk way areas of the village changing area of Banbridge Leisure Centre.

“CCTV has been in operation in the entrance and vanity area of the changing village for many years, the implementation of this extended coverage will offer greater security for all facility users.

“Banbridge Leisure Centre has an excellent reputation for the protection and security of all its customers however recently there was a reported incident of attempted invasion of privacy within the changing area.

“The installation of CCTV will minimise the possibility of any repeat of such an instance.

“Users can now be recognised entering and leaving specific cubicles and using lockers which in the unlikely event of a reported incident will enable a perpetrator to be identified and reported to the PSNI.

“It should be noted that this CCTV coverage does not view inside cubicle areas and cannot be adjusted in any way to do so.”
