Campaign commemorates centenary of Great War

The nationwide initiative is the headline project of 14-18 NOW, the official cultural programme for the First World War centenary commemorations.

The Lights Out campaign promises to be a dramatic event. The UK will plunge into darkness between 10pm and 11pm on Monday, August 4, marking the hour that Britain entered the Great War 100 years ago.

To commemorate the anniversary, a candlelight vigil will be held at Mossley Mill, where the replica WW1 trench will be the focal point.

In partnership with the Ballyclare, Carnmoney and Whiteabbey branches of the Royal British Legion, the council is inviting the general public to this unique event, which starts at 9.15pm in Mossley Mill.

Alderman Hogg said: “To mark this momentous anniversary, the council and local branches of the Royal British Legion welcome everyone to join them for a candlelight vigil at Mossley Mill. It will provide an opportunity to participate in this moment of shared reflection on this poignant and historic occasion.”

In an act of symbolism, all lights will be turned off between 10pm and 11pm at council facilities across the borough, with just a single light being left on at Mossley Mill.

Local householders are also being invited to take part in the show of remembrance by turning off their lights on August 4 between 10pm and 11pm, leaving on only a single light or candle for a shared moment of reflection.

Candles will be lit at each of the war memorials in Whiteabbey, Lilian Bland Community Park, Ballyclare War Memorial Park and Ypres Park as part of the commemoration.
