Campaigners meet MP to discuss concerns over waste plant plan

Dr McCrea is due to lead a cross-party delegation of politicians opposed to the Boghill Road plan to meet with Environment Minister Mark H Durkan, possibly next month.

The delegation, which will include representatives from all major parties, is expected to highlight concerns relating to various impacts the proposed incinerator could have on residents and the surrounding area.

During last week’s meeting, No-Arc21 chairman Colin Buick also took the opportunity to discuss with Dr McCrea the Full Circle Power proposals for a waste gasification plant in east Belfast - plans which, he believes, offer “a viable alternative” to the Hightown project.

“We very much welcome the fact that our public representatives are coming together to reflect the views and fears of the local communities over this (the arc21) proposal,” Mr Buick said.

“Since arc21 first launched its plans we have said that it is the wrong technology on the wrong site, and the fact that over 1,500 letters of objection have now been lodged with Planning Service illustrates the widespread concern this proposal has caused.

“With the cross-party support of local representatives, we look forward to a constructive meeting with the Environment Minister, who will ultimately decide the fate of the application.”
