Campbell asked for drug for Claudyman

DUP MLA Gregory Campbell asked the Health Minister Edwin Poots if he would review the case of pancreatic cancer sufferer, Adrian Allen from Claudy, who until recently was being denied a potentially life-saving drug through the local health service.

Mr Allen, aged 56, was sent home with painkillers after being told by doctors in December that he had pancreatic cancer.

A specialist at his last appointment at the Belfast Trust explained to his family that the drug Sunitinib was his only hope.

But until recently Sunitinib - whilst available in Britain - was unavailable in Northern Ireland.

Mr Campbell asked his party colleague the Health Minister whether he will review the case of Mr Adrian Allen from Claudy, who is currently suffering from pancreatic cancer, to establish if he can be given drug treatment which is available in England, Scotland and Wales but not currently available in Northern Ireland.”

Mr Poots responded: “I am unable to comment on individual cases. However, the Health and Social Care Board has made a decision to commission Sunitinib for treatment of a specific form of pancreatic cancer and consequently this medicine is available for patients in Northern Ireland with immediate effect.”
