Campbell asks SoSto look after RUCmemorial upkeep

DUP MP Gregory Campbell has raised the current condition of a Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) memorial in the West Midlands at Westminster.

The East Londonderry MP asked the Secretary of State for Northern ireland Theresa Villiers if she would undertake a review of the condition of the RUC George Cross Association memorial at the National Memorial in Staffordshire.

He also asked her to take steps to ensure that resources are allocated for the upkeep and maintenance of that memorial.

Mrs Villiers said the memorial fell outside the aegis of her control but she would contact the Department of Justice about it.

“I recently met with the chair and members of the RUC George Cross Foundation when we discussed the issue of the RUC memorial.

“Responsibility for this issue rests with the Department of Justice and I have undertaken to raise the matter with the Justice Minster in the near future.

The RUC memorial is located in the National Memorial Arboretum, which was set up in 1997 by Commander David Childs to honour those who have served, and continue to serve, the United Kingdom .

There are more than two hundred dedicated memorials across the entire site, which covers an area of around 150 acres.
