Campbell welcomes progress on renal unit

EAST Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell has welcomed the confirmation that the Northern Health Trust has approved the business case for the establishment of a Renal Unit for up to 18 dialysis stations at Causeway Hospital.

Mr Campbell said: “Since the opening of the Causeway Hospital in 2001 I have pressed for the provision of a Renal Unit at the hospital given the number of patients in the Causeway area requiring dialysis, with patients in Coleraine having to travel to Antrim and Belfast to access this service.

“I am pleased that as a first step towards providing such a unit. This has been confirmed in a reply from the Chief Executive of the Northern Health Trust following my recent letter requesting an update as to the present position in relation to the provision of renal dialysis facilities at the Causeway Hospital.”

The Chief Executive went on to say “In accordance with procedures, this business case has now been forwarded to the Commissioner, the Health and Social Care Board, for approval and it will also then require approval from the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety. As soon as the necessary approval has been received, the Trust will proceed to the design stage.”
