Campsie fire 'very worrying'

A FIRE at a recycling plant in Campsie on the outskirts of Londonderry has been described as a "very worrying" development after it emerged someone was seen running away from the site just before the fire started.

Speaking from the scene of the fire SDLP councillor Jim McKeever - a member of the NI Fire Authority - said: “There have been a number of fires started in this area since the beginning of March.

“I spoke to people who told me someone was seen running away from the area when the fire started. This is a very worrying development – not least because there is always the possibility of loss of life.

“There are also 40 or 50 people employed at the City Industrial Waste site who depend on these jobs – especially in the current economic climate.

“Much praise must be given to the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service for their prompt action in helping to put out this blaze.

“I would call on the PSNI to keep a closer look on the area and hopefully their ongoing investigations will lead to the perpetrators being caught and brought to justice.”
