Can you tell a tale about Eddie Wales?

DO you remember Eddie Wales, a popular character around Ballymoney many years ago? Do you have any information about the deaf boxing star when he was just a young lad? If so, you might be able to help his son.

Andrew Wales from Eastermeade is retracing his family tree and is particularly looking for the whereabouts of a missing picture taken when his father was 18 or 19-years-old.

Speaking to the Times, Andrew explained: "My father, Eddie Wales, live at Townhead Street and was a popular character around the town.

"He was a local boxer and a firefighter with the AJS, despite being deaf following a fall when he was a child.

"He married my mother Gladys from Balnamore, who was also deaf. They lived at the Glebeside and Eastermeade during their married life and had five children.

"My father died in April 1980 aged 62 and my mother died a year ago age 74."

So far Andrew has managed to map out his family history up to 1849, however would love to find out more about his father as a gift to Ballymoney Museum.

"While researching my family tree, many people have spoke about a picture of my father stood with his boxing gloves on when he was 18 or 19-years-old, however I can't seem to find it.

"I've been told it's somewhere around the town and I would love to get hold of it. As my father was well known in the local area I would like to donate any pictures and information to the Ballymoney Museum for display. I've been working with Keith Beattie from the Museum how has helped me a lot, but we seem to have come to a dead end and are appealing for help from your readers."
