Canadian folks stars to appear at Playhouse

AWARD-WINNING Canadian songstress Amelia Curran - described as a bit like "Leonard Cohen channelled in a dusty saloon by Patsy Cline" - is headed for The Playhouse Theatre in Londonderry this month.

A multiple East Coast Music Award nominee with an extensive discography, as well as a reputation as a playwright and actor, Amelia Curran comes to The Playhouse Theatre on Thursday October 28 at 8pm.

As well as having had her plays performed in fringe festivals, Amelia’s extensive discography, including: War Brides (2006), Lullaby for Barflies (2002), Trip Down Little Road (2001), and Barricade (2000), have been described as a selection of songs that combine "a quicksilver sweetness with wry, homegrown wisdom" according to one music critic.

She will be joined at The Playhouse by four time 2009 Music Newfoundland and Labrador Award Winners and East Coast Music Award nominees 2010, The Once, a trio of young folk Musicians, building on the traditions of their native province.

They were also nominated this month for three Canadian Folk Music Awards to take place in November in Winnipeg. The Newfoundland group is up for Traditional Album, Vocal Group and New Emerging Artist of the Year.

“Amelia describes the craft of song-writing as an act of ‘expressing the inexpressible, a means of describing the indescribable,’” General Manager at The Playhouse Niall McCaughan said.

“She is a truly unrivalled talent and we’re delighted to give audiences the opportunity to see her this month in the intimate setting of The Playhouse.”

Tickets for Amelia Curran and The Once on Thursday, October 28 at 8pm are 11 / 8 (con) and are now on sale now at the Playhouse Box office on (028) 71268027 or online at www.derryplayhouse.co.uk.
