Canadian woman seeks details on local descendants

A CANADIAN woman is hoping readers can help her to connect with her ancestors in the local area.

Barb Urquhart contacted the Star to search for descendants of the Slater family who farmed in Hillsborough in the early 1800’s.

Barb will be visiting to area in September to carry out research on her family at the Public Records Office and she said she “would dearly love to see if there are any descendants still around or anyone who has information on this family.”

From her research so far Barb has found that Price Slater was her great great great grandfather. He married Frances (Fanny) Donaldson on June 20 1810 in Hillsborough. They farmed in Aghandunverran townland.

Price and Fanny’s children - who were baptised in Hillsborough - were: Rosanna, 1808; Agnes, 1810; Jonathan, 1812; Esther 1815; Sarah, 1817; Phoebe, 1820; Elize, 1822, died 1829; Sophia, 1827; James, 1829.

They emigrated to Canada in 1831. The only members of the family Barb has records of in Canada are Price, Fanny, Rosanna, Esther, Sarah and Phoebe and maybe Jonathan, so perhaps some stayed in Ireland.

Barb also has lots of information about the family in Canada for anyone who may be related, but she would love more information about their lives in Ireland.

If you have any information on the Slater family you can contact Barb via email at [email protected]
