Cancer parade success

THE annual Cancer Research band parade in Ballymoney has experienced its best year for sometime.

The fundraising event, organised by the Ballymoney branch of Cancer Research, has raised tens of thousands of pounds for the charity and this year a total of £13,580 was collected drawing great praise from the organisers.

Not only was there an increase in the number of bands taking part, but the all-day collection which saw volunteers out and about in various parts of the Borough, appears to have paid dividends with the chair of the committee, Mr Mervyn Ferris, reporting generous giving from the public.

As ever, Ballymoney Old Vehicle Club members brought a touch of glamour to the occasion with their gleaming cars to head the parade and another tradition of committee members walking in front of the lead band - in this case Tullaghans - also gave the event a unique look.

One of the parade’s most staunch supporters; indeed the lady who started the event many years ago, Mrs Molly Holmes, viewed the procession from her home and as a mark of respect to her, bands stopped to acknowledge her contribution down the years.

Mrs Holmes will celebrate her 99th birthday this month.
