“The Ballymoney area has a long history of support for Cancer Research UK dating back to 1957 and inspired by the work of my predecessor Mrs Molly Holmes OBE.

“Mindful of this, it was with great pride that I joined the current committee and became Chairman in 2002.

“My parents have each survived cancer so I have double reason for recognising the importance of the outstanding work done by Cancer Research UK.

“I see my role as organising and encouraging young people to get involved in fundraising activities and stressing that through their efforts they are playing an important role in the fight to beat cancer.

“None of this would be possible without the support of a core committee of Dorothy, June, Eddie, Ivor and the team of collectors.

“As a committee we are overwhelmed by the financial support given to us by the people of the Borough who have contributed in the region of 175,000 over the past seven years.”

Mervyn added: “The response to the door-to-door collection this week has been very generous and we look forward to the continued support of the general public for Saturday’s event.”
