A spokesperson said, “We as a committee would like to express our sincere thanks to all those who continue to support us in so many ways. “This year we held yet another highly successful flag day and coffee morning. We also for the first time held “A Touch of Christmas” at the home of Mrs Margaret Archibald where people were invited to drop in during the afternoon or evening and enjoy mice pies and a glass of mulled wine. There were some craft stalls and donations were generous.

“Also a first was a St Patrick’s Day lunch which was enjoyed by many. Our special thanks to all those who donate in any way including especially Castlerock Glasgow Rangers Supporters Club who support us every year, this year presenting us with £2400.

“We also remember all those who support us by donations in lieu of gifts at a birthday or special occasion and, of course, contributions in lieu of flowers at times of bereavement.

“Cancer Research helps all those affected by all types of this disease and it is clear to see that progress is constantly being made.

“To date the Coleraine Branch of Cancer Research UK has raised a staggering total of £491, 471 which means that in this coming year we will reach and hopefully pass the £500,000 mark. Our next event will be our annual flag day on 9th June so we encourage your continued support.”

The Coleraine branch is also backing a national campaign called “The Answer is Plain” which calls for all branding to be removed from tobacco packaging.

In a recent survey, nine in ten (90 per cent) of people interviewed across the province think that tobacco marketing is harmful to children – a response which is significantly higher than the UK average. And more than three-quarters (77 per cent) said that the stylish, colourful branding, striking logos and distinctive packet designs make tobacco products more appealing to children.
