Car belonged to girlfriend

A Banbridge man who took his girlfriend’s car without her permission, had no insurance or driving licence, heard the local court last week.

Niall Patrick McColgan (24) from Oak Grove was fined a total of £365 and banned for three months.

He was detected by police on 7 November last driving a Ford Focus. Police carried out data checks and established that it was only insured for a female.

He had no valid licence and was frank with police during interview admitting the charges.

A solicitor said McColgan usually got a lift to work but his co-worker who picked him up had been relieved of his duties.

“He found himself with no other means of transport to work and stupidly took the decision and was apprehended and made full admissions.”

“He didn’t waste police time and has now arranged another lift to work and realises he must not drive this vehicle.

“He is under no illusions as to the seriousness of this and I ask the court for one final act of mercy.”

McColgan was given 20 weeks to pay the fines.
