Car bomb explodes at Strand Road

DISSIDENT republicans are being blamed for an overnight car bomb explosion close to Londonderry's main PSNI station.

The explosion was heard across the city when it detonanted at approximately 3.20am on Tuesday morning.

A taxi driver was forced to ferry the device close to the PSNI station by two hi jackers, one of whom was armed.

No one was injured in the explosion, but the blast damaged the police station's perimeter wall.

Mayor of the city, the SDLP's Colum Eastwood condemned the attack and said: "Police didn't even have time to evacuate a nursing home or apartments right beside the police station.

"We are very lucky today not to be talking about fatalities. It's an attack not just on the police but the entire community."
