Car burnt out in Spencer Road car park

The remains of a car was found burnt out at Spencer Road car park in the Waterside area of Londonderry yesterday morning.

The car, pictured in the photograph above, was completely destroyed in the fire.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said that enquiries are ongoing and that the Fire Service believe the fire was deliberate,

Police are investigating after a car was burnt out in a car park on Spencer Road, Derry overnight”, a spokesperson said.

“The incident was reported to police shortly after midnight by Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service who believe the car was deliberately set alight. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Ulster Unionist Councillor Mary Hamilton said that the torching of the car is to be utterly condemned.

“This would put people off parking in Spencer Road and, of course, it has to be utterly condemned if there was any criminal intent behind the burning”, she said.

“I can’t see the reasons behind why anybody would do this, whether it was their own car or if it was belonging to someone else. It is shocking that this has taken place in a busy city centre location like Spencer Road - in a car park that is used day in and day out both by people working in Spencer Road and people travelling to the shops and businesses there.”
