Car damaged in suspected bomb attack

A CAR Has been damaged overnight in Londonderry in a suspected pipe bomb attack.

The incident happened shortly before midnight when the rear window of the VW Passat was smashed and a device thrown inside the vehicle at Springtown Road.

A number of homes were evacuated while the car was examined by Army Technical Officers in the wake of the explosion.

The alert has since ended

SDLP Derry Councillor Mark H Durkan condemned the attack.

He said: "This pipe bomb was an attack on the entire community.A number of homes in the area had to be evacuated and this is sadly becoming an all-too-common occurrence right across the city.

"We are very fortunate that this attack did not cause further damage or indeed any injuries.

"I would urge anyone with information as to who was behind this incident to contact the police immediately."

Detectives in Londonderry are appealing for information and are asking people to contact them at Strand Road PSNI station on 08456008000.
