Caravans evacuated after major gorse fire

FIRE chiefs say a gorse fire, which has all but destroyed a beauty spot in Ballycastle, was started deliberately.

The blaze started close to Silvercliffs Holiday Village on Monday afternoon.

Fifteen caravans had to be evacuated, over fears that the fire could spread to the nearby site.

Fire Service Area Commander Peter O'Reilly said it was a massive fire.

"We reckon there is about 5,000 square metres of wildland completely destroyed in this fire.

"Not only has this mindless action put in danger the lives of firefighters and the public but also the wildlife in that area," he said.
