Care village plan rejected

AN ambitious plan to create a 'care village' on the outskirts of Ballymena seems to have bitten the dust.

The scheme, from Coolgreaney Investments Ltd., envisaged a community consisting of an 80-bed nursing home, 40-bed residential home, a 20 bed fold and sheltered housing units to be built on land near Ballee Road West.

However, planners refused the scheme on no less than seven issues with the main themes being ‘no demonstrable need’ and ‘contrary to countryside development’ criteria.

Ballymena Borough Council’s Public Sector Liaison Committee heard that the Department considered that insufficient information had been provided to establish the acceptability of the proposed development.

“The applicant has failed to provide a Transport Assessment to demonstrate the scheme can be fully accommodated on the existing roads network,” the department’s summary concluded.
