Career success has nothing to do with luck

MANY people believe that success involves good luck.

But those people usually fall short of their career goals, waiting for good luck to come in through the front door. This, though, will not bring career success. Like a brick wall, successful careers are built one brick at a time. They are almost never stumbled into.

The components of a successful career are preparation, education, hard work, and diligence. Of course, luck helps, but it is not a necessity,

Preparation:

It is important to map out a success plan for the career you are interested in pursuing. Where will you go to school? How will you pay for it?

There are living arrangements to contend with, and having a good idea of what you would like to do after college.

Maybe you will have to live with your parents while you work two jobs in the summer to pay for your education. You have to apply to colleges and investigate job options.

If you are planning on getting student loans, how much money will you need to make after you graduate from college and land your first job in the career you have chosen?

Education:

The college you attend matters a great deal. People who attend high ranking universities will have more job opportunities than graduates from colleges that are barely on the map.

Who would you be more inclined to interview for an open position in your company? The better the school, the more open doors to success.

Also think about how much education that you are going to need and what will give you an edge over other potential employees.

Maybe a Bachelor’s Degree is required for an entry level position in your choice of career. It’s beneficial to research the industry of your potential career. Maybe a Master’s Degree would enable you to be brought into a company at a higher-paying level. These are all important considerations.

Hard work:

Hard workers stand out from the others because most employees are not that ambitious.

The tenacious employee who hangs on, works hard, and keeps a positive attitude (even in today’s overworked, underpaid workforce) will outlast those who leave for greener pastures. Loyalty will take you a long way in getting noticed on the job.

Diligence:

Similar to tenacity, diligence on the job translates as going to work when you don’t feel up to par, working overtime without complaint, and consistently doing your best.

There is an abundance of flash-in-the-pan employees who do great work once in awhile. But consistently diligent employees are few and far between.

Common sense:

It’s really just common sense.

In order to experience career success, preparation, education, hard work and diligence are far more achievable than waiting for opportunities to fall in your lap.

Sure, it’s exciting when you encounter a stroke of good luck. But it is far more rewarding – both emotionally and financially – if you achieve your career goals on your own personal merits.

Then, if good luck arrives, it’s just frosting on the cake.
