Caring Caretaker's Jail and Bail

A MOTLEY crew of inmates were frog-marched through Coleraine Town Centre on Saturday - much to the delight and amusement of nearby shoppers - but it was all in a good cause

The convicts were, in fact, kind members of the community who volunteered to take part in the Caring Caretaker's Jail and Bail to raise money for seven worthy charities.

After facing the "wrath" of the two Teresas (Teresa Fairley who acted as Judge and Teresa Boyle who was clerk of court) in New Row Presbyterian Church Hall, the jail birds were escorted by Davy Boyle and the PSNI through the town centre to be incarcerated in a make-shift jail until they raised their bail money target of 500.

The list of kind-hearted convicts was Alice McAlary, Dr Chestnutt, Maggie Wade, Louise Greer, Darren Markey from Coleraine College, Paul Archer from Vodafone, Adam Stockman from the Lodge Hotel, Rev Bert Ritchie, Steven Farlow, Betty Calvert, Iain Stewart, Damian Mullan from the Coleraine Chronicle and Paul Nash from the Coleraine Times.

Davy Boyle said that the bail money to date has reached over 5,000 with more to come and the proceeds of a street collection on the day came to 850.

Davy thanked PSNI Constable Gillian Anderson and Sgt Sean Craig for escorting the convicts, Rev Robert McMullan for providing the church hall to be used as a "court", the street collectors, Darren Pollock, Brian and the staff from Martha's House who provided refreshments.

He also thanked everyone who took part in the Jail and Bail, the general public who pledged bail money and those who contributed to the street collection.

Davy's next fundraising event will be a car boot sale at ASDA this Sunday morning from 6.30am until 12.30pm. Cars 5 and vans 10.
