Carnlough teachers share in Euro vision for science

Mary Haughey, principal of St John’s Primary School, and vice-principal Ciaran Kinney, have returned from a prestigious Science Education Festival in Europe.

More than 350 science teachers from 25 countries presented extraordinary teaching ideas and concepts at the Science on Stage festival from in Słubice, Poland and Frankfurt, Germany.

Mrs Haughey said: “Attending a conference such as Science on Stage has been a great honour for St John’s Primary School.

“We have been able to present all the good work we do at our own school and learn from our international partners about how to embrace a much wider perspective to our delivery of science education.

“Our school seeks to embrace high standards in all that we do and to achieve this it is important to undertake quality professional development to ensure that we stay at the forefront of teaching and learning.

“Taking part in this event has ensured that St John’s Primary School is well placed to ensure a quality education for the children in our care.”

Mrs Haughey and Mr Kinney are both winners of the Association For Science Education Teacher of the Year award, the Rolls-Royce Science prize and associate presenters for the National Science Learning Centre in N. Ireland and STEM specialists. They are now members of the Astra Zenica Science Teaching Trust, who aim to improve the quality of science teaching in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
