Carnlough Women’s Institute meeting

The group heard a talk from Mrs Anna May Wharry on the work of Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) in the Third World.

She emphasised the importance of supporting various projects by contributing to the ‘Pennies for Friendship’ scheme on members night.

Member Mrs Bridie Gamble gave a talk on sugar icing.

Bridie had previously baked a madeira caked, coated with marzipan. She then explained and demonstrated the icing process by measuring the cake and rolling out a block of icing to the appropriate size.

Having placed the icing on the cake, Bridie crimped the edges to give a pleasing design. She then rolled out two strings of icing, twisting them together and arranging them around the base of the cake to give it a truly professional finish.

Bridie then demonstrated the art of making floral designs in icing, placing these on top of the cake and adorning them with wired ribbon.

Bridie showed a number of pieces of equipment used for icing cakes and informed the members where these could be purchased.

The demonstration was most enjoyable and a delicious supper, including sampling the cake, was enjoyed by all.

The competition on the best-decorated cup cake was won by Moira McAllister. Second place went to Anna May Wharry.
