Carnmoney woman celebrates centenary

A long-time Carnmoney resident celebrated her 100th birthday last week along with family, friends and community leaders.

Among the avalanche of birthday cards received by Rebecca (Ruby) McMichael, pride of place went to the one from Queen Elizabeth.

The birthday bash was held in Jordanstown Nursing Home where Mrs McMichael now resides after many years living at Carnvue Drive, Carnmoney, along with her late husband James.

Their sons Stanley, Ivan and Derek along with daughter June Fox welcomed the many guests, including Newtownabbey Mayor, Alderman Fraser Agnew, the Church of Ireland Bishop of Connor, Rt. Rev. Alan Abernethy, and the Rev Bill Boyce, rector of St Brigid’s Parish Church, Glengormley, where Mrs McMichael worshipped for many years.

The staff at the home kindly arranged for the library to be made available for the function and this was much appreciated by all in attendance.

Four generations of the McMichael clan were present and the eldest great grandchild, eight-year-old Caroline, provided the highlight of the day with a polished display of Irish dancing.
