Carnmoney youth get help with expedition equipment

The Carnmoney Open Award Unit of the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme has received a £500 Community Award from Progressive Building Society, the largest locally-owned mortgage lender in Northern Ireland.

The money will go towards the purchase of replacement expedition equipment such as tents and cooking equipment. As an Open Award centre the group draws in young people from a variety of backgrounds and abilities, from across the boroughs of Newtownabbey and Carrickfergus. A group of 12 young people recently safely completed their expedition for their Silver Award with the help of the new equipment.

Seven organisations, all committed to working for the benefit of their local communities, received support totalling £5,750 in this, the twentieth round of Progressive’s Community Award Scheme. Members of the Society who wish to nominate a community group for consideration for a future Award should contact their local branch of Progressive Building Society. The Community Awards are issued twice a year.
