Carpark at harbour 'an eyesore'

CALLS have been made for a council-owned facility at Ballycastle harbour to be cleaned up.

At a meeting of Moyle District Council on Monday of last week, several members said it was time the “eyesore” was addressed as it took away from the aesthetics of the harbour.

Cllr Randal McDonnell said the gated ferry terminal compound resembled a prison and was difficult to access as only one gate was often open.

He said a number of car parking spaces were taken up by various objects - some of which appeared to be scrap - which should be removed to create more space.

“There seems to be an awful lot of wasted spaces,” he said.

Cllr Cara McShane said there was space for 20 to 30 more parking spaces adjacent to the harbour.

“I think it should be seriously looked at to turn it into car parking spaces,” she said.

“It wouldn’t cost an awful lot of money to do that.”

She added: “It’s ugly, unsightly, attracts vermin and is a health and safety hazard at this time.”

Cllr Catherine McCambridge suggested council write to those who own vessels in the harbour asking them if they own any of the parts currently in the compound.

She said any items not claimed should be removed within a month.

Cllr Robert McIlroy said: “What would concern me is that we have no control over that yard.

“We’ve no idea who owns what.

People should not be able to leave whatever they want in the yard.”

A council officer said he would ensure both gates were open during opening hours.
