Carrick-based Sailablity members join Ulster crew

A group of sailors from Carrickfergus-based Belfast Lough Sailability have represented Ulsterin the Sailability Ireland President’s Cup inter-provincial disabled sailing championship.

The event took place at Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin last weekend and saw a team of 10 sailors from each of the four provinces competed in four different classes.

Team Ulster was headed up by Belfast Lough Sailability, with requests for competitors from Foyle Sailability and Carlingford Lough Sailability.

The resulting team enjoyed competitive racing along with other teams from Munster, Leinster and Connaught.

The sheltered waters of Dun Laoghaire Harbour provided an opportunity for two days of close racing.

Leinster was the overall winner with Munster the runners up.

Chair of Belfast Lough Sailability, Anne Taylor said: “Our team of 10 sailors would like to thank the organisers of the event and although conditions turned very wet on the Sunday, we thrived on the close quarter sailing in moderate winds and in the safe confines of Dun Laoghaire Harbour.

“Some unfortunate gear failure did not mar our enjoyment of racing alongside fellow sailors with disabilities and their crew members from all over Ireland. Belfast Lough Sailability is looking forward to hosting the President’s Cup in our home town of Carrickfergus in the not too distant future.”
