At the meeting, council members responded to reports in the Belfast Telegraph that Carrick station was one of eight local stations under consideration for closure.

Chief Executive of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council Anne Donaghy revealed that she had discussed the issue with PSNI Superintendant Ryan Henderson, the Commander in charge of Mid and East Antrim District Command Unit.

She told councillors: “The Mayor had spoken to me regarding the potential closure and I have contacted Ryan Henderson.

“He informed me that there is nothing official to report.

“The PSNI are undergoing a review of estate across Northern Ireland which will include all police stations in this borough.

“He agreed to keep council up to date.”

Fears over Carrick station’s potential closure were raised two years ago when opening hours were slashed from 15 hours a day to four hours a day.

At the time, PCSP members said that the reduced hours did not signal station closure.

Meanwhile, the recent reorganisation of policing across Northern Ireland will see the replacement of the old police response teams with two new Neighbourhood Policing Teams based in Ballymena and Larne/Carrick, with the aim of reestablishing a 24/7 policing base in Larne
