Around 20 staff members, including manager Bea Cox, agreed to take part in the stunt last Thursday afternoon at the Rodgers Quay store.

The challenge, which has grown in popularity in recent weeks through social media, sees each participant donate £3 to charity in exchange for being drenched with two buckets of cold water.

With the process usually captured on film, a second person or group is then nominated to repeat the feat, with local staff throwing down the gauntlet to their colleagues at the Bangor and Holywood Exchange branches.

Like the make-up free ‘selfies’ campaign earlier this year, all proceeds will go towards Cancer Research UK.

The stunt is the latest in a series of fundraisers undertaken by staff at the store, said Carrickfergus Sainsbury’s PR ambassador Anne Patterson. “We had the flash mob in store a few months ago to raise money for Sport Relief, and we’ve just launched a charity partnership for the year with PAKT (Parents and Kids Together),” she added.

Donations to the Cancer Research UK campaign be made by texting ‘BEAT’ to 70007.
