Carrick seniors prove you are Never Too Old

ACTRESS Olivia Nash visited Carrick this week to help highlight that local seniors are still living an active life in the community.

The Give My Head Peace star - better known as Ma - was guest speaker at the launch of a new publication, ‘Never Too Old’. The booklet, unveiled at Carrick Town Hall, showcased various groups throughout Northern Ireland who have benefited from funding through the Turkington Fund.

One of the groups who received support as part of the initiative was Carrick Neighbourhood Development Group, which meets at Oakfield Community Centre. Chairwoman of CNDG, Beryl Knight said the group works in the community “to create a better future for all”. Projects include computer, painting, crocheting and textile sessions, and a seniors club called Golden Girls - which received almost 2,000 through the Turkington Fund.

Members used this funding to create a memory quilt, depicting scenes from their younger days. The finished quilt was then put on display at the launch event in the Town Hall.

Mrs Nash said she was “privileged” to be associated with the Turkington Fund. She added: “It is incredible to see such a wide range of people showcasing amazing activities from across Northern Ireland. What these groups have been doing is fantastic, and they all look like they had so much fun taking part. Older people have so much to share with the young people of today, and we can learn a lot from the younger generation as well.”

Les Allamby, vice chairman of The Community Foundation for NI, which manages the Turkington Fund, said: “Each of the groups featured in the booklet provide a tremendous example of community endeavour, touching on history, arts and crafts, dance and reminiscence work. It all combines to give an image of our senior citizens that is far removed from normal stereotypes.”
