Carrick to host accordion champs

The 20th annual Northern Ireland Open Accordion Championships will take place in Carrick for the seventh time on February 25.

The competition has attracted entries from as far afield as England, Scotland and the Irish Republic as well as a strong local entry.

The organisers say that the event promises to be a “real feast of accordion music all day”.

Catering for all types of accordion music, there will be solo, duet, group, orchestral and marching band sections suitable for all ages and grades ranging in styles from classical and continental to traditional.

There will also be a number of trade exhibitors which shall add greatly to the interest and atmosphere.

The competition will take place at Loughshore Hotel in Carrick, starting at 9.00 am and continuing until 4.30 pm with the prize presentation taking place later that night at a gala dance in the hotel.

The organiser went on to say that the championships promise to deliver an extravaganza of accordion music catering for all tastes”.

The competition has been recognised by the National Accordion Organisation of the United Kingdom as a qualifying heat for the British Championships.

There is no admission charge.

Last year, it was the largest accordion festival held in Northern Ireland and attracted a record 245 entries.
