For almost a decade Rotarians and volunteers have been a familiar sight outside the Carrickfergus Tesco store in the run-up to Christmas.

Rotarian Mary Sinnamon explained; “The idea was that members of the public could make a donation to purchase a ribbon which would be used to decorate the tree and the funds raised would be used to support organisations which provide a valuable service to the local community.

“The Tree of Hope continues to the present and over the years has raised £85,000.
Action Cancer and Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice have benefitted every year. Other organisations which have been supported include Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children, Diabetes UK, British Heart Foundation, Men’s Cancer and Alzheimer’s Association.”

Mary added: “Those who collect at the tree comment on the generosity of Tesco shoppers and on the moving personal stories of many of the givers who have been affected by cancer, have experienced the excellent care of the Hospice movement or enjoyed the support of the many other charities which have benefitted from funds raised at the tree.

Carrickfergus Rotary Club members are grateful to Tesco management and their Community Champion Anne Ritchie for facilitating the Tree of Hope over the years. In particular they are indebted to Tesco shoppers for their generous giving for the benefit of others in the community.”
